Greeble Gobble II: The Thingness of a Thing

Actual painting size: 10.75" x 11" Framed: 17" x 17" x 1.25"
This is a developing body of paintings concerned with subverting traditions of surrealism through mode of practice. While dreams, the subconscious, and the grotesque heavily inform the imagery, the addition of AI and machine-learning bring new questions to modality, technique, thinking, and the role of the image. These paintings reference composites I construct through the lens and tradition of still-life; these collages incorporate generative nonsense with digital painting, though it is only through paint and painterly decisions that I am able to realize my eerie organisms.
The term Greeble is a pun playing on both the definition and its use in Psychology. Greeble refers to meticulous, often unnecessary, amounts of visual detail used to generate interest. In Psychology, a "Greeble" refers to a novel visual stimuli used in studying facial recognition. Series of "Greebles" share common features and are contextualized using a matrix of constructed gender and family. I find this concept reminiscent of gender and queer theory, leading me to believe my “Greebles” are performing some sort of alienesque drag.

Love the new artwork in my office and living room. It lifts us up everyday, acts as a conversation piece in Zoom calls, and we love the most being able to support artists in our communities as well.
